ITINERARY

D1. Arrival and transfer to Surdesti

After transferring from Cluj, we begin with a short cycling to around two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Surdesti we are at the edge of the historical Maramures. We will then be enthralled by the atmosphere and beauty of the natural landscape located a mere few kilometers outside town.

D2. Surdesti – Breb 40 Km

We start our day with a quick transfer to the old mining town Cavnic. From there, we continue with a forest road climb to Creasta Cocosului – a favorite place for excursions of the region’s residents. There we will admire a spectacular view of a major part of historical Maramures. After a longer descent, we arrive in the heart of Maramures where we will visit local craftsmen as well as the UNESCO World Heritage wooden church of Desesti. Our last stop for the day is the village of Breb, which was visited by The Prince of Wales in the spring of 2004.

D3. Breb – Botiza 45 Km

We depart Breb by horse-drawn carriage. In Budesti we will visit another UNESCO protected wooden church. Later, we will see the method of making the ’’cergi’’, which is made of wool and is the material of traditional carpets. In Botiza we will have a chance to observe the everyday life of an orthodox monastery.

D4. Botiza – Viseu de Sus 40 km

We begin our day by visiting a goat pen and sampling various goat cheeses. After a short by-pass in Ieud to visit our last UNESCO wooden church, we leave the main road in Salistea de Sus and cycle through a bucolic valley en route to Viseul de Jos.

D5. Mocanita Day – Tranfer to Sapanta

The main attraction of the tour is the Mocanita: a narrow–gauge railway purpose-built for the transportation of lumber. (Mocanita is among the last in Europe serving its original purpose.)
